POPPY SEED takes performance poetry to a new level. As a pioneer of the ‘Spoken Soul’ genre, she has been described as being ‘on the cusp of poetry and song.’ She sheds a positively appealing ‘light’ on the urban music scene. Born in London on Poppy Day (11.11) of Jamaican parentage, Poppy Seed has steadily been making waves in the International poetry and music scenes. With one self financed album, ‘A Taste’, under her belt, Poppy Seed and her band has certainly ‘walked the walk’.
POPPY SEED appearances have included The Glastonbury Festival, Portobello Fest, numerous London theatres, community festivals, UK colleges, social injustice campaigns, and women’s prisons. In 2001, Poppy Seed toured the UK with ‘In Celebration of Our Sisters’ ending at Royal Festival Hall London; performed at ‘Lyrik Eins’, the Munich (Germany) poetry Festival, which was broadcast live on TV and radio; and appeared in South Africa for the ‘Step Afrika’ Aids Awareness project . In 2002, International Woman’s Month saw student circuit performances, a guest appearance at ‘Swollenski’s’ in The Strand, and a performance for ‘Live at Kindred Spirit’. Poppy Seed presented The fashion show ‘5O Years of Fashion’ in poetic style, for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations in Waltham Forest London in May, and co-hosted the Anti Racist Fest in Eltham (the area of the Steven Lawrence murder) in July. 2003 was promising with a commission to write and perform a piece on the theme of Diversity, for the prestigious Health Congress in Harrogate, a tour in Jamaica, and the start of ongoing seasonal tours. Poppy Seed performances have graced Anti Social behaviour conferences regarding race / hate Crime, and Victim support, domestic violence, and Youth ‘At risk programs.
Continually recording ’04-‘05, Poppy seed was complimented by Sade’s smooth operator famed producer Robin Millar who has produced two tracks POPPY SEED’s outstanding album “COMING THROUGH” with Sade’s endorsement. Throughout Poppy Seed has covered a lot of work in Education, performing and offering workshops secondary schools. POPPY holds the current Award for Best Performance Poet from‘ BWA’ (Black Women in the Arts). This unsigned act has a new album launched in May 2006, and is heading for the UK regions; already causing intrigue in Sheffield; and overtures of rapturous applause at the famous Togfest in Milton Keynes in June. Poppy Seed looks forward to reaching wider audiences with this unique spin on Dub poetry. |
